Carolina Herrera was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and descends from of a long line of landowners and statesmen. The mother of four girls, Herrera collaborated with couturiers on her own made-to-order clothes, and attended runway shows since the age of thirteen (her first was Cristobal Balenciaga’s.) After receiving positive feedback on a test collection of wedding gowns that she created in 1980, she moved her family to New York and formed her fashion company one year later. She has won many, many awards worldwide for bridal gowns and couture evening gowns, and was presented with the 2004 CFDA Women’s Designer of the Year honor.
